Sexually transmitted Genital Herpes Simplex Viruses
Type 1 (HSV -1) and Type 2 (HSV-2) infect an estimated 25%
of adult Americans with 500,000 new cases appearing each
year. After primary infection, the virus remains latent
until recurrence. Recurrent outbreaks may be symptomatic or
asymptomatic. Symptomatic episodes entail blisters on or
around the genitals or rectum that burst leaving ulcers,
which take weeks to heal. An individual infected by the HSV
virus will carry the virus for life. The virus is
transmitted to sexual partners during active herpes
episodes. HSV-2 in the female genital tract can be the cause
of potentially fatal infections of infants and newborns.
HSV-2 infection appears to increase susceptibility to
heterosexual spread of HIV infection.
Redox Pharmaceutical Corporation has preliminary
demonstration that animals pre-treated with Doxovir-M™ were
protected from Herpes type 2 infection.
