Human Papillomavirus: Cervical Carcinoma and Genital Warts

Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) ranks as one of the world’s major Sexually Transmitted Diseases. Over 20 million Americans are infected with this virus. Strains of HPV are known to cause common skin warts, genital warts and are the cause of nearly 100% of cervical carcinomas. More than 50% of infected women are without symptoms and are unaware of their infection, the potential seriousness of their illness, and the possibility of transmitting the virus to their sexual partners. In developed countries, cervical cancer ranks as the 5th most frequent female malignancy and accounts for 7% of all female cancers. In the USA, over 5000 women die each year of cervical cancer caused by the HPV virus. In developing countries, where 80% of the cases occur, the problem is yet more severe.

At present there is no effective drug available to prevent the transmission of HPV. Doxovir-M™ is effective against HPV both in vitro and in vivo. Redox Pharmaceutical Corporation is engaged in studies seeking both a prophylactic and a therapeutic application of Doxovir-M™ for Papillomavirus.
